How can we get engagement, interaction, and collaboration in the math classroom?

This question is at the core of my teacher soul.  Traditional pedagogies such as lecture-practice-homework are great for some students, but more are disengaging and not seeing the value of procedural memorization.  Classrooms that invite student exploration, collaboration, interaction, and discussion enable students to understand math concepts on a deeper level, leading to a more lasting and positive experience.

In the math classroom, are we teaching students to think, collaborate, and engage with content?  Or to be mimickers, memorizing and replicating steps a teacher shows them?  We both know the answer to this, and I'm on a mission to help transform math classrooms into engaging, collaborative settings where students experience what it means to be involved in their learning.

Two years ago, I transitioned out of the classroom into a consulting role after doing several teacher training workshops in the previous two years.  I’m passionate about working with math teachers to create more engaging classrooms.  I spend most of my time training teachers to engage with students using free Desmos activities.
